Selecting a Plant and Planting
Before you begin assembling your Longhorn Planter, you’ll need to decide if you’d like to include a plant to grow within it, and if so, which one.
The Longhorn Planter is a striking addition to any room or wall on its own, so adding a plant isn’t necessary!
But if you would like to add a plant, consider the amount of sunlight available where the Longhorn Planter will hang, as well as the amount of watering the plant will need, as this may require the Longhorn to be removed from the wall to water thoroughly.
The following plant types look great in the Longhorn Planter:
Succulents
Climbing plants - Pothos, Philohendron or Ivy
Cascading plants - Dichondra or Strings
Before assembling the Longhorn, plant your selected plant in the bottom section of the skull. This section is the planter pot and includes drainage holes and houses a drip tray to be slid underneath.
Assembly
Assembling the bottom, top and horns are as simple as clipping together.
First push the top and bottom halves together, ensuring the four clips are aligned. It is easiest to clip the rear clips together first, then the front clips. Some pressure may be required, but if the clips are aligned the two halves will clip together such that no gap between the pieces should be visible.
Then take one horn, check it is on the correct side of the skull by checking the tip of the horn points slightly forward.
Insert the horn fully into the slot keeping it horizontal, and push gently up vertically. It should easily clip and lock into place.
Hanging the planter
Now the fun part, choosing where you want to hang your planter! It is worth considering a place where the plant will get adequate light, will be somewhat accessible to allow watering, and somewhere visible so you can admire it throughout the day!
You’ll need an existing hook, such as a picture hanger, or to install one.
CAUTION!
Mount the planter using a hook rated for the appropriate weight of the complete Longhorn Planter plus wet soil and plant. A hook that is suitable to hang a total weight of 1.5 kg is recommended.
Mounting the Planter on a permanent hook, such as a plug and screw, or a mechanically fixed hook, is recommended to ensure the planter doesn’t fall over time.
Thread a wire or string through the rear holes of the planter pot.
Use the front holes if you’re hanging off a large hook. This will keep the planter flush with the wall.
Use the rear holes if you’re using a smaller hook, as the hook may not reach the front wire.
Tips & Tricks
Keeping plants happy and healthy in your Longhorn Planter is as easy as any indoor planter. Ensuring your plant gets enough light, water and feed will keep your Longhorn thriving.
Watering
It is recommended to remove your Longhorn Planter from the wall to water thoroughly as needed for your plant selection, allowing it to drain for a few minutes before inserting the drip tray and returning to the wall.
Plants than need little water, such as succulents, may do with a small amount of water only, in which case watering while still mounted on the wall may be possible, however the drip tray is small so it remains concealed, so more than a small amount of water may overflow from the tray.
Other uses
The Longhorn Planter makes a great vase (use a small jar eg. a curry paste jar, with water placed inside the planter ) to display your cut flowers, or for those too busy (or lazy) to tend to live plants, artificial plants also look great!
For those more creative, installing lights would make for a striking light feature. We’re currently experimenting with different ways to display our Longhorn Planter ourselves so will update this page with pics, details tips and tricks as we discover them!
